چکیده
Abstract Theories of the electrophysiology language comprehension are mostly informed by event-related potential effects observed between condition averages. We here argue that a dissociation competing effect-level explanations potentials can be achieved turning to predictions and analyses at single-trial level. Specifically, we examine dynamics in data exhibited biphasic N400–P600 effect pattern. A group multi-stream models explain positing each individual trial should induce either an N400 increase or P600 increase, but not both. An alternative, single-stream account, Retrieval-Integration theory, explicitly predicts amplitude correlated In order investigate P600, apply regression-based technique which quantify extent amplitudes predictive electroencephalogram time window. Our findings suggest that, indeed, inversely within-trial and, hence, driven same trials. Critically, demonstrate this finding also extends only monophasic conditions. sum, observation is with on by-trial basis supports single stream view, such as difficult reconcile processing mechanisms proposed models.

On the Proper Treatment of the N400 and P600 in Language Comprehension
Event-Related Potentials (ERPs)—stimulus-locked, scalp-recorded voltage fluctuations caused by post-synaptic neural activity—have proven invaluable to the study of language comprehension. Of interest in the ERP signal are systematic, reoccurring voltage fluctuations called components, which are taken to reflect the neural activity underlying specific computational operations carried out in give...
متن کاملA time and place for language comprehension: mapping the N400 and the P600 to a minimal cortical network
We propose a new functional-anatomical mapping of the N400 and the P600 to a minimal cortical network for language comprehension. Our work is an example of a recent research strategy in cognitive neuroscience, where researchers attempt to align data regarding the nature and time-course of cognitive processing (from ERPs) with data on the cortical organization underlying it (from fMRI). The succ...
متن کاملA Neurocomputational Model of the N400 and the P600 in Language Processing
Ten years ago, researchers using event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to study language comprehension were puzzled by what looked like a Semantic Illusion: Semantically anomalous, but structurally well-formed sentences did not affect the N400 component-traditionally taken to reflect semantic integration-but instead produced a P600 effect, which is generally linked to syntactic processing. This...
متن کاملConflicts in language processing: a new perspective on the N400-P600 distinction.
Conflicts in language processing often correlate with late positive event-related brain potentials (ERPs), particularly when they are induced by inconsistencies between different information types (e.g. syntactic and thematic/plausibility information). However, under certain circumstances, similar sentence-level interpretation conflicts (inanimate subjects) engender negativity effects (N400s) i...
متن کاملThe Relationship of Language and Emotion: N400 Support for an Embodied View of Language Comprehension
According to embodied theories, the symbols used by language are meaningful because they are grounded in perception, action, and emotion. In contrast, according to abstract symbol theories, meaning arises from the syntactic combination of abstract, amodal symbols. If language is grounded in internal bodily states, then one would predict that emotion affects language. Consistent with this, advoc...
